Crown of Midnight by Sarah J Maas

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J Maas

I’ve recently finished Crown of Midnight, the second book in the Throne of Glass series, and I ploughed on with the hope that this book would be an improvement on the first.

Both books were good but I’m just not feeling like I’m being pulled in enough; the very end of the book did pique my interest but I feel that a reader should be hooked throughout, not just in the final three or four chapters! That “lack of being gripped” was something that I didn’t experience at all when reading the ACOTAR series so I’m surprised that it’s the case here!

In this book we follow Celeana after she has become the King’s Champion and is slowly working her way through the King’s hit list. We learn more about our protagonist and about the magical world she inhabits, with characters like Chaol and Dorian getting more depth. It’s clear that the story is making its way from the exposition up to growing action but it’s feeling quite slow - perhaps it’s the pace at which I’m managing to read it too though!

It’s clear that the books are just about to take off now, that the path has been paved for the rising tension to come and I’m intrigued but I don’t know how much faith I have in the writing 🙈 Here’s hoping I’m proved wrong and that the next book pulls me in from the get go!
