Review: I Haven't Been Completely Honest With You by Miranda Hart

Are you a Miranda fan? I really enjoyed her tv show and have read her previous book entitled ‘Is It Just Me?’ and I really enjoyed it. When I spotted ‘I Haven’t Been Completely Honest With You’ it suddenly dawned on my that I hadn’t seen much of Miranda at all lately and decided to give it a whirl.
With no idea what to expect, I found this book to be so endearing and heartwarming. Miranda explains her absence from the screen - for which she really owes no explanation whatsoever - and fills us in on the journey she’s been on over the past few years. Detailing her chronic illness and her journey towards acceptance and authenticity, this book is a brilliant book for anyone coming to terms with the knock on effects, such as the endless tiredness that go hand in hand with most chronic diagnoses.
What I loved about this book is how Miranda very accessibly discusses the different research that has been done in the area of self-care and mindfulness. She refers often to the “-ists”, the psychologists, the professionals who have all the words of wisdom. She goes through the books outlining her ‘Treasures’ as she calls them, steps to consider when dealing with ill health or mental health. It was a joy to read. Hart recognises that the pace and demands of the modern world can often be too much for us and advocates for slowing down, doing the things that make us happy, and to stop apologising for who we are and how we feel.
There is a beautiful surprise in this book too that made me so happy. Any time I’ve spent reading books by Miranda, or watching shows that she is in, I’ve only ever come away feeling happier and full of joy. This was my last non fiction read of 2024 and it was a great one! If you’re a fan of Miranda, or perhaps you need to hear from someone else who suffers with chronic illness and fatigue, then this is a book I’d be adding to my TBR.
